False Ceiling Design

What value addition does a false ceiling design bring to interiors? Did you ask this question to your interior designer? Did you get a satisfactory answer? What if someone told you it could save your bills? What if someone told you that you could live peacefully if you selected the right material for the ceiling design? In this blog, IDW Interiors will cover many such areas where false ceilings play a crucial role in maintaining an ideal ambience in your house. We also know about different materials used for making false ceiling design and technical implications, and will also see some modern, simple pop designs.

Which Materials are best for False Ceiling Design

  • Gypsum False Ceiling Design

One of the most popular materials for false ceiling design is gypsum. It is a soft sulphate material which, when mixed with pop, is used for making false ceilings and drywalls. They are lightweight and can be bent into any form or shape. They also come in ready-to-install formats.

  1. Best for: Designer false ceiling for statement rooms. Provide flexibility of shapes such as curves, natural flow, layers, and recessed shapes.
  2. Where to use: Better for foyers and living rooms.
  3. Price per sq. metre: Standard non-fire and moisture-resistant board costs around ₹250–₹450/sq. metre.
  4. Technical benefits: Help in noise absorption and hide wiring.
  • PVC False Ceiling Design

PVC false ceilings are extremely lightweight. They are made of lightweight plastic panels and are structured with metal frames beneath the ceiling. PVC ceilings are one cost-effective solution to replacing gypsum and POP false ceiling designs with a hassle-free, ready-to-install option.

  1. Best for: Moisture-prone areas, the best option for economical and maintenance-free false ceiling design.
  2. Where to use: Bathrooms, living rooms, and bedrooms (in humid climates).
  3. Price per sq. metre: Basic PVC boards cost nearly ₹60 – ₹120/sq. metre.
  4. Technical benefits: Saves you from ceiling seepage and prevents moisture.
  • POP False Ceiling Design

POPs are the most famous, old yet all-time favourite material for false ceiling design. This material is used for even making wall treatments. Popular from the royal era of India, POP has come so far from making intricate traditional designs to brilliant modern false ceiling designs. If you are keen on art and decor, you must choose a POP false ceiling design.

  1. Best for: Since they are the major constituent of gypsum but come in powder form, they are also flexible in design aesthetics, smooth finishing, fire resistance, and better sound insulation.
  2. Where to use: Use this false ceiling design for complete rich aesthetics and if more inclined towards traditional design.
  3. Price per sq. metre: Standard design with cove lights costs ₹150 – ₹250/sq. Metre
  4. Technical benefits: POP is great for light integration and high customisation of design.
  • Wooden False Ceiling Design

They are one of my favourite materials used for false ceiling design. They are generally a suspended ceiling system that is made often either from natural wood, engineered wood, MDF, HDF, plywood, etc. The best material for warmth and rustic-look interior design in a home. They give a unique and cozy look to your space.

  1. Best for: Use them for premium finishes, warm, cosy and sustainable interiors.
  2. Where to use: Living areas, dining areas, study rooms, bedrooms
  3. Price per sq. metre: The plywood with laminate/veneer costs nearly ₹250 – ₹400/sq. metre.
  4. Technical benefits: Helps in noise cancellation and keeps homes naturally cool, thus saving on your bills.
  • Glass and Acrylic False Ceiling Design

The major upcoming shift in modern interior design is going to come in false ceiling design. The glass ceiling design is the new thing. However, these have been used very creatively in our early architecture too, but these days they come in a huge variety, such as transparent, translucent, backlight, colourful glass, and floral pattern ceiling design.

  1. Best for: Glass ceilings are great for independent homes for better natural light, while acrylic ceilings give a similar effect in flats and apartments with their backlight system.
  2. Where to use: Use primarily in living areas, bedrooms, and foyers; can also be used in pergolas/cabanas on terraces.
  3. Price per sq. metre: A backpainted-designer toughened glass costs nearly ₹900 – ₹1000/sq. Metre
  4. Technical benefits: The toughened glasses are heat resistant and fire resistant, don’t break easily, help in noise cancellation, and are easy to clean and maintain.
